Brief summary of venue

Located approximately 120km from Johannesburg is Foothold, a property owned by the Johannesburg Hiking Club. Nestled in trees at the base of the mountain range, Foothold offers visitors amazing hiking trails, stunning scenery, bird watching and accommodation on site.

Permit/ permission info

Designated MCSA Weekend: The second-last weekend before the last full weekend of each month (Friday to Sunday). MCSA Jhb members have full access to the property and only the parking fee applies.

Other weekends: You may camp on other weekends (except the last full weekend of the month) at a discounted rate.

Quite technical in sections with a very steep climb.

Accommodation

Accommodation available: Camping area, two showers and toilets, outdoor kitchen with a fridge and hot water. Hikers Haven; a fully-kitted, rustic house that sleeps up to 10 people.

Availability of water for drinking

None, so bring your own. There used to be a permanent spring (hence the name ‘Fountain Gully’), but this water has basically dried up.

Trail options to the Magaliesberg escarpment include Chain Ladder and Footloose Gully as well as trails closer to the base for less strenuous hiking and nature walks.
