2014 climbing meets now available: January to March

We have another full year of trad and sport climbing, climbing orientation for beginners and hiking ahead. Most weekends offer something involving rock and wilderness combined.

Some of the excellent reasons to work off post-festive season flab are:

  • Trad climbs in our gorgeous backyard, the Magaliesberg in North West Province.
  • Big wall trad climbing in Blouberg early February.
  • A First Aid presentation by MCSA Search and Rescue late February.
  • A weekend of deepwater solo climbing, slack-lining, trad climbing and lots of swimming in a huge river pool at Wilgepoort in early March.
  • A wild-flower hike in the Magalies middle March.

The entire meets list for January through March is available at "Upcoming Events" here on our website, in mobile-phone friendly format.

See you out there!

Extreme Climbing Film Show: Reel Rock

On Wednesday 27 November we're very fortunate to present a showing of the 2013 Reel Rock Tour at our clubhouse.

Reel Rock is a fantastic annual collection of short films about some of the best climbers in the world and their extreme adventures. This year's as hair-raising as usual, complete with footage of some really big falls.

Proceeds from the evening will go to our Wilgepoort Purchase Fund.

The Sensei: Yuji Hirayama and Daniel Woods

Extreme Climbing Film Show: Reel Rock

From the Reel Rock website: "Forty-three-year-old Yuji Hirayama is one of the great legends of modern climbing. Near retirement, he plans to complete a project, one of his hardest ever, at the spectacular summit of Mount Kinabalu, on the island of Borneo. But first he must find the right partner. Enter Daniel Woods, the young American boulderer who is one of the strongest humans in the climbing world, but lacks mountain experience. Daniel-San travels to Japan to prove himself worthy of Hirayama’s mentorship, and the unlikely duo team up for the expedition of a lifetime."

Spice Girl: Hazel Findlay

From the Reel Rock website: "The UK climbing scene is known for its strict traditional ethic, yielding dangerous routes and a competitive machismo among the driven young climbers risking it all to prove their boldness. It’s the last place you’d expect to find a nice little blond girl putting all the lads to shame, but Hazel Findlay is doing just that. The first woman to climb the British grade of E9 (super hard, super sketchy), Hazel is a connoisseur of loose rock, dodgy gear, and big runouts. Having mastered the scrappy sea-cliffs at home she teams up with Emily Harrington to tackle the massive, untamed big walls of Taghia Gorge, Morocco."

Stephen Venables

Mountaineer Stephen Venables is one of the most accomplished mountaineers and explorers of our time. He was the first Briton to climb Everest without oxygen and has summited many 5000+ metre peaks.

In this illustrated talk, Venables draws on his five expeditions to the sub-Antarctic island to South Georgia, bringing alive the story of Ernest Shackleton’s ill-fated Endurance expedition.

Venables retraced that route twice, and made first ascents of several peaks on the island. With classic archive images, stunning modern photography and film, this is a must-see presentation.

Tickets: R100 per person, both MCSA members and non-members

Mountains of the Moon and meeting gorillas

On Wednesday 11 September 2013 at 19h30, Chris Ziranek will present a slideshow at the clubhouse about his recent hike and climb in the fabled source of the White Nile in Uganda, the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the mountains of the moon. Photo supplied by Chris Ziranek

Says Chris: The Rwenzori Mountains are situated in west Uganda and contain the 3rd highest mountain in Africa. For centuries, the source of the White Nile was lost in darkest Africa. It was only in the late 19th Century that explorers, Speke and Stanley, put this fabled area on the map.

In June/July 2013, Chris Prinsloo and I hiked this cold, damp, misty but beautiful almost magical area, with lofty peaks, huge bogs, giant lobelia, groundsels and permanent glaciers. We successfully summited the highest peak, Margherita (5109m), in true Alpine style, across mixed rock, ice and snow. Afterwards, we encountered the gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in SW Uganda."

Free entry to MCSA members and visitors.
