PATROLLING

"In the mountains, you are sometimes invited, sometimes tolerated, and sometimes told to go home." ~ Fred Beckey

Patrolling with MCSA Johannesburg

Above the line safety and conducting business as usual through visible patrolling.

Patrolling plays an important role in maintaining MCSA-owned and managed properties. Patrolling is a collaborative effort between MCSA members, Eco Rangers and landowners in the region. The MCSA Patrollers play an active role in monitoring our properties as a preventative measure to ensure the continued safety of our community. Patrolling takes places across the various properties in the Magaliesberg biosphere, specifically the Tonquani Complex (Upper Tonquani, Lower Tonquani, Boulder & Cedarberg), Mhlabatini and Paardekraal (North & South). MCSA Johannesburg patrollers also occasionally monitor Dome Pools and Castle Gorge when visiting these properties.

The Patrolling Sub-committee focuses on above the line safety and business as usual with visible patrols. Patrollers also work closely with the below the line Security Sub-committee, passing on information relating to any suspicious activity in the area. Patrollers are easily recognisable in their high visibility branded bibs and approach all hikers. Patrolling not only monitors that all visitors have permits or membership cards but also assists in guiding lost hikers and educating those who aren’t aware of permits and bookings for the properties, and is an opportunity to recruit new members to the MCSA.

The sub-committee currently consists of 29 volunteer patrollers, having conducted various patrols since starting in August 2024. Combined with the work by the Security Sub-committee, we believe the visibility of the patrollers was a contributing factor in keeping all MCSA properties open over the December period. This in a step in the right direction as previous years’ saw properties closed not just to camping, but to day hiking over the festive season.

Why we need Patrolling on our properties

  • Regular patrolling helps prevent illegal activities on our properties, which can harm the sensitive ecosystems of the Magaliesberg.

  • Patrolling deters unauthorized access, unsafe behavior, and potential vandalism, ensuring that only members and approved visitors use the properties responsibly. This creates a safer and more enjoyable experience for all.

  • Routine patrols allow for early detection of trail erosion, damage to signage, or structural issues, enabling timely maintenance.

Patrolling is a perfect example of: Not what the Club can do for you, but what you can do for the Club!

Mountaineering, rock climbing, abseiling, hiking and other related activities are inherently dangerous and can lead to or cause serious injury, material loss and even death. The Mountain Club of South Africa advises that you only participate in these activities if you are competent to do so, or are under the guidance of an experienced person, and you are using the correct equipment. Any activity in which you participate, is done entirely at your own risk. The Mountain Club of South Africa accepts no liability or responsibility whatsoever for any accident, injury, death or material loss arising from participation in MCSA activities, no matter in what manner caused and whether allegedly due to negligence or not.
