In on our walk around Hamerkop Kloof, Karin hopes to create awareness of what an amazing ecosystem the Magaliesberg is, will point out all the living organisms you encounter when you walk in the Magaliesberg, talk about the important role each organism plays in the natural environment. She will also show you how our Magaliesberg plants and animals (particularly insects) are adapted to the harsh environment, the low nutrition of what little soils there are, the little rain, exposure, acidic rocky soils created by the quartzite rock, how plants and animals cope with veld fires which is a natural phenomenon on the Highveld. There is of course more soil, more compost, more protection from the elements in the kloofs – learn what lives out in the open and what lives in the kloofs and how much life occurs underground. Find out how plants store water and nutrients and stop erosion and offer little nutrition to the creatures living in this environment. the important role of insects and other little creatures in the Magaliesberg,- how do these creatures cope? Discover the uses of the plants and animals to us humans (medicine, food), as well as the impact of alien invasive plants on our ecosystems and on us humans.
We will meet at Hamerkop. Travelling time from Johannesburg is about 2 hours. Bring lunch and refreshments and some water. We’ll aim to be back at the cars by about 3.30.
