    All day
    2019.09.01-2019.09.02

    31 August – 1 September 2019:  Climbing @ Wilgepoort

    Meet leader:  Chris Ziranek  tel 082 373 5605  / email: cziranek@global.co.za

Wilgepoort is a trad climbing area just over two hours’ drive from Johannesburg, which was discovered and developed in the 1970’s.
The crag itself is in the picturesque Gouwsberg Valley on the banks of the Wilge River. Whilst appearing to be quite a small crag, it surprises one by having a significant number of high quality lines of up to 4 solid pitches. The crag is North facing and gets very hot in Summer, making it an excellent Winter crag.

It is now clear to just about everyone that the climate is not what it used to be. Mountain climbers spend a lot of time exposed to the climate, and some of tehir activities depend on particular climate conditions. How is teh climate changing in teh maintain areas of the world, and South Africa? How might this affect the mountain environment, and how you enjoy it? What can you do to help keep climate change within tolerable limits, and in what ways will you need to adapt?

Bob Scholes, apart from being a lifelong mountain climber, is a leading South African expert on climate change. The talk will be scientifically correct and up-to-date, but not so technical that interested fellow-mountaineers can’t follow it. About Grade 18.

  • Castle Gorge to Dome Pools and back – with Cally and Dane
    All day
    2019.09.29

    Meet leader:  Cally Bishop  tel:  082 453 8040  /  email:  cally@cityrock.co.za

This hike takes us to Castle Gorge from the parking in the South and we will hike, partly on the Rand Water Board road and partly cross country, through Likkewaan Kloof to Dome for lunch, where you can swim.  Depending on the fitness of the group, we might take in the waterfalls on the way back.  It’s a lovely walk through the Castle Gorge grasslands, which are looking beautiful.

This is a long hike over some rough terrain, so a good level of fitness is needed.  We’ll aim to get back to the cars at about 4pm.

For more info please contact Cally.   The group number will be limited to 30.

There is no charge for members. Non-member fee is: Adults: R40, youth up to and including 17 years: R20
