The Dome system is our most widespread stream system as far as weeding [and enjoyment] goes. This winter our team of Thomas and Lucky have been working on the lantana at the top of the side gully into Dome. Now it’s time for crofton weed and they have started with that, but are on fire break duty for a few weeks. As the crofton spreads down the gully we have to work on it before flowering and seeding in spring.

  • Dome to Escarpment Hike
    All day
    2019.07.21

Meet Leader:  Sacha da Cunja  tel:  072 277 6927   or email magalieshike@gmail.com.

We’re taking the opportunity of the cooler weather to do some longer hikes.  This beautiful hike will take us past the big Dome pools and camp-site to Dome Neck. Then back to the pools to follow the river down to the parking.

There will be sections with no clear path and half the hike is uphill, so a good level of fitness is required to negotiate the rough terrain.

We will meet at 06:45 at the Total garage on the corner of Malibongwe and Northumberland, which will be an opportunity to share cars. If you know the way, then meet at the Dome parking just after 08:00.  We will aim to finish the hike between 15:00 and 16:00.

Because the hike goes past the pools, those who want to can spend the day at the pools, then find their own way back to the cars.

Please contact Sacha so he has an indication of the number of people attending.

Cost for non-members:  NON-MEMBERS: Adults: R40/p/day. Youth up to and including 17 years: R20/person/day.

Booking for this hike is essential, as numbers will be limited to a maximum of 30 people. To book, please send an e-mail to andrewedepohl@gmail.com or a message to 073-238-1432. Please pay Andre in cash on the day.

On Sunday 28 July 2019, Andre Wedepohl will lead a hike up the Nooitgedacht Gorge and over the portion of the battlefield on top of the mountain. We are very grateful to the new owners of the Nooitgedacht Game Ranch for allowing us to do this. Andre will give a presentation about the battle, and several of the positions where British soldiers were attacked during the battle will be visited.

The Battle of Nooitgedacht was by far the largest battle which was fought in the Magaliesberg region during the Anglo-Boer War. On 13 December 1900, a British force of 1 500 soldiers under the command of Major-General Ralph Clements was soundly defeated by 2 500 Boers under the command of Generals Christiaan Beyers, Koos de la Rey and Jan Smuts. A large part of the battle was fought on top of the Magaliesberg at Nooitgedacht.
